Dr. Eugene Skinner Magnet Center

(Our visit was arranged by the Kellogg’s Omaha Plant)

When you arrive at Skinner Magnet Center, you are at once, overwhelmed, by the campus, its staff, volunteers and students. Usually, we write these pages for the kids at the schools we visit, but, in this case, we want to share the basic story of this remarkable education facility with all who visit these pages.

There is not a nice way to describe the area that Skinner is in.  Clearly, it is not in what one would call an affluent neighborhood by an stretch and in point of fact, it sits as a strong beacon of hope, in a very depressed area of Omaha.

The school has become the center of the community and a wonderful source of pride that everyone involved takes personal ownership of.

We learned that these kids are just like kids everywhere else we go, yet at the same time, they are children that have opportunities to learn that can’t help but evoke excitement in all that are fortunate to come in contact with them.

Mathematics and communication arts are the school’s claim to fame that has opened some wonderful doors for them. These children got a personal visit from the Secretary of Education. They also got to take part in Space Shuttle Mission STS-99, and be a part of the EarthKam project.

They are giving kids too. They just finished a penny drive and raised over $1,000.00 for local charity. When you leave, you have a huge smile and you just keep saying…

Wow, Wow, WOW !!!

Having said all that, let me share some pictures with you of some extra ordinary children, having some fun by sharing a part of their morning with an ordinary old balloon guy and his “Gr-r-reat TONY Balloon”.

To all those involved with teaching the children of Skinner Magnet Center, Thank You for allowing us to share a part of your day during our visit.  You have provided us a glimpse at what the future of education in this country should be. I am so proud to have had time with you and your children.

On behalf of the Kellogg Company, my boss TONY The Tiger and the personnel at the Kellogg Omaha Plant, Thanks for all you do, we are proud to know you.
